- Create a two-dimensional flower template. The template should be the size of the largest flower you want to include in your bouquet. It can have between five and eight petals. - Unfold the flower and adjust the petals to your liking.
- Cut the floral wire into 14-inch strands and trim the edges off at an angle to make them sharp. Push an end through the base of each blossom and pull the wire through until the blossom is in the middle.
- Fold the wires down and twist the lengths until the flower’s stem is stable. Gather the fabric bouquet together and wrap a satin ribbon around the wires to cover them. Cover the base as well, as the wires’ edges can snag on things around them. Tie the ribbon off at the base of the bouquet to complete the look.
- Fill the bowl about halfway with warm, soapy water. You can use as much soap as you want, but do not use an abrasive detergent or a harsh cleaning soap. These can discolor your jewelry and even scratch the surface of the stones.
- Wash the titanium jewelry in the warm, soapy water. If you have several pieces, submerge them all, then brush them gently with the soft baby toothbrush to remove any dirt residue and grime. Use circular motions, but do not scrub the jewelry with the brush. Be very gentle. If your titanium jewelry is colored, you should not use the brush; instead, rub it with a soft cloth.
- Rinse the jewelry off with warm water. Continue to hold the titanium jewelry over the bowl so that it does not get lost if you accidentally drop it.

But after the pomp and circumstances, JFK preferred to go without a hat, causing the popularity of men’s hats to wane. Even without their brimmed hats, American businessmen continued the trend of wearing starched white shirts and suits to work. Sports coats were unacceptable in this era that preceded casual Fridays. Men’s ties and shirt collars typically were thin at the onset of the 1960s. By the end of the decade, those same ties widened to almost five inches and were made from loud, printed or striped fabrics.
- Americans expressed their political and social restlessness through fashions during the turbulent 1960s. Men swapped their crew cuts and clean-shaven chins for long hair and full beards. They preferred denims and buffalo plaids over the standard button-down shirts and slacks, even though jeans historically had been reserved for the working class. Throughout the decade, men shopped for bell-bottoms–pants that had a wide flare between the hem and knee. They also preferred hunting for jeans at Army surplus stores. Guys enhanced there overall psychedelic looks with tie-dyed T-shirts, love beads, sandals and bare chests underneath fringed vests.
- Men turned to turtlenecks and polyester trousers in between the Kennedy and Woodstock influences on fashions. Fashion hits included double-breasted blazers and Nehru shirts that had open mandarin collars and embroidered trim. Conservative patterns on shirts and ties were out and plaids, stripes and paisleys were in vogue. The Beatles introduced the mop top hairstyle in 1964 while performing in their dark suits and ties. By 1969, the legendary musicians were sporting beards, long hair and more flamboyant clothing, and American men were following along.
Master the Art of Layering
- The number one strategy for adding sophistication to your wardrobe is to work in layers. Mix fabric and colors in unexpected combinations to add depth and distinction to your look. For example, instead of wearing a simple blue dress shirt and navy slacks, make the look more interesting by adding a black-and-white block-stripe half-zip sweater to the mix. For date night, instead of wearing an untucked sport shirt and jeans, wear your jeans with a tattoo-inspired graphic print T-shirt and unstructured blazer. The idea is to avoid a look that’s all about tailored work pieces, or all about casual, unstructured pieces. Mix elements of each for a look that’s modern, easy and age-appropriate.
Invest in a Classic
- A classic two-button, three-piece suit is one of the best fashion investments you can make. Although many men hesitate to wear suit pieces separately, it’s the best way to stretch your dollar. If you can afford to buy only one suit, pick a classic extra-fine merino wool version in a versatile, season-less color like charcoal gray or navy. Your suit jacket will layer over dress shirts, V-neck sweaters, cardigans and T-shirts, making them all more polished in an instant. Your suit vest turns a casual look into something hip and edgy. The suit pants pair perfectly with sweaters or sport shirts for the office’s casual days. Having these three tailored pieces to mix in with your existing wardrobe staples elevates your entire look and multiplies your options.
Update Your Denim
- Denim styles evolve year after year as jeans get wider or narrower, darker or lighter, higher-waisted or lower-waisted. J. Crew creative director Jenna Lyons tells Details magazine, “…men need to keep updating their wardrobe, because change is subtle. For example, denim is getting slimmer. If you’re wearing jeans from two years ago, they probably don’t look current.”
A few general rules apply for denim. Dark washes are dressier, while lighter washes are more casual. A relaxed fit is fine, but the days of baggy denim are over. Avoid washes with too many effects: whiskers, dye splotches, creases, holes, rips or razoring can look fine in small doses, but you should never wear a pair that’s been treated with all of the above. Just like your suit pants, your denim pants should break properly at the top of your shoe and hit the point where the heel of your shoe meets the upper. (Hint: Your socks should never show when you’re walking.) It’s okay to cuff your denim if your footwear is rugged (think work boots) or beachy (think flip-flops). If you’re wearing dress shoes or oxfords, cuffs are off limits.
Men’s clothing during the 1950s was generally very conservative and fairly traditional, with a few exceptions. The Cold War and McCarthyism encouraged traditional American values and dampened counterculture movements and self-expression. This cultural shift caused men to conform both politically and sartorially. This was especially true of the beginning of the era, but as the 1960s approached, clothing styles slowly became less rigid and somewhat more expressive.
In sum, this era in men’s fashion is typified by plain colors, simple lines, classic suits, hats, preppy clothing, leisurewear and a small but notable counterculture influence by the beatniks.
- Men’s suits during the 1950s were very clean and simple. The shoulders were not as wide as they were in the Forties, but there was still some fullness in the pant legs. Suits were generally drab, traditional colors like black, brown and gray, and they were constructed from traditional fabrics like wool and flannel. Ties were simple and thin. Men during this era were expected to wear a suit most of the time, especially if they worked in an office, had a social engagement or simply wanted to put their best foot forward. Of course, no man in a suit was completely dressed unless he was wearing a hat.
- Men of this era wore hats. Typically, men wore fedoras, derby hats or some variation, but a man’s outfit was not considered complete without one, especially in formal or business dress.
- The 1950s were a fairly prosperous era, which allowed for leisure time, which necessitated leisure wear. Because all things Western were popular during this era, many leisure shirts were cowboy-inspired. Hawaiian print shirts were popular due to the nation’s fascination with the culture of its newest state. Loafers became the leisure shoe of choice. Polo shirts also became increasingly popular. Jeans, however, were still considered an item of clothing only appropriate for outdoor work. Slacks, instead, were the leisure pant of choice. Collared shirts were the norm, even for leisure wear; t-shirts were still considered an undergarment not fit to be worn in public.
- The preppy clothing look was popular with younger men. This youthful, more casual look was typified by cardigans, sport coats and letterman jackets, which were proudly worn by student athletes. Young men of this era occasionally omitted ties and wore their collars open.
- There were two counterculture movements during this era that had a notable influence on men’s fashion: the beatniks and the greasers. These looks, however, were very much counterculture looks that were not typical of the time.
The beatnik movement, which originated in New York’s West Village, was inspired by the French artists and intellectuals, and was typified by predominantly black clothing, slim trousers and sweaters.
The greasers, or stereotypical “bad boys” of the times, wore white or black t-shirts, work shirts, jeans, leather jackets and slicked-back hair.

- Read magazines and watch movies or TV for inspiration. When you see an outfit or accessory that appeals to you, make a note. Notice trends that emerge in your likes and dislikes. For instance, you might be drawn to glamorous vintage outfits or prefer a punk rock look. Find a celebrity whose general height, hair color and appearance match your own, and observe how she dresses to flatter her body type or evoke a different mood. Add your own personalized details to make the outfits your own.
- Borrow clothes and accessories. Trying on many different styles is the easiest way to see what looks suit your personality. Ask friends and family members whether you can try on clothing items or accessories that catch your attention. If possible, borrow the items for a few days and test your new look at work, school or a party.
- Consult with people who have known you for a long time as well as new friends. Put on a miniature fashion show or ask friends and family which outfits they have noticed and liked in the past. Arrange a quick shopping trip so you can style new clothes. Listen to their advice and feedback regarding which clothes suit your personality.
- Take photos of your outfit every day. Try to pose in the same position each time, preferably facing forward so that your outfit is clearly visible, and stand against a white wall or other basic backdrop. Look at the photos later to note positives and negatives. Try the same outfit several times, updating it and improving it each time.
- Write a list of your favorite outfits from your past. Focus on outfits that made you feel happy and confident, whether it was a sparkly dress at prom or brightly colored rain boots when you were young. Update your list of inspirations regularly, and use updated versions of the ideas when shopping for new items or putting together an outfit. For instance, wear a pair of sparkly earrings or stylish combat boots.
How to Work for a Fashion Magazine
- Intern your way to a position. Most people in the magazine industry gain experience through various internships. It is very difficult to enter the industry without any experience in the field that you want to break into. If you’re eyeing the fashion department, you can intern for college credit as a fashion assistant who helps in fashion shoots. If photography is your arena, you can contact a fashion photographer and work as an apprentice. Since the industry is very competitive, it is not uncommon that aspiring fashion assistants are willing to work in unpaid internships.
- Build reputation through related experiences. You can break into the industry by taking another route, by way of advertising, event planning, project management, and the like. There are different departments and functions within a magazine and gaining experience through a previous job can land you a position either in the editorial side or the business side of a publication. You can start in ad sales with an account executive or media buying experience at an advertising agency, for example. If you’d like to get into editorial, you can build knowledge and connections by being an editorial or executive assistant.
- Freelance. Another entry point in the world of fashion magazines is to pitch ideas as a freelance writer. Be inquisitive and observant. Follow the trends in school and in your neighborhood and be up to date on the latest news in the fashion sphere. If there’s a fashion show at a benefit or high school nearby, be willing to cover it. Long hours await, but the motivated build rapport with a publication by networking with the editors through constant contact and communication.
- Develop a portfolio. If you have varied experiences in the different departments that a fashion magazine has, you can create a portfolio through mock mags. If you have an eye for photography and a way with words, you can design a mini-magazine that features your photos and writing. You can also develop skills in layout and typography, which helps in the aesthetic aspect of your publication; this skill is useful at any magazine. A versatile employee is attractive to an employer since he or she can be placed in various functions within the company. He or she can also train other employees by drawing on her past experience and expertise. Making yourself marketable this way is a good step towards your goal.
- Some historians credit the rise of mass celebrity culture in America to the early 20th century. Between 1900 and 1929, the entertainment industry in New York was flourishing with different forms of entertainment, including opera, vaudeville, radio and film. Many Americans became infatuated with celebrities and contributed to a new, consumer-based culture that continues today.
- The influence of chic fashion can be traced back to the 17th century, and it's often credited to Louis XIV and his obsession with glamorous and elegant clothing. Today, celebrities have become the trendsetters in fashion. From red carpet award shows to celebrity gossip magazines, media coverage of “who” a celebrity is wearing can influence a person's decision to buy the latest designer clothing and accessories.
- The entertainment industry often pressures celebrities–especially actresses–to look thin. Since some people look to celebrities as role models, this can have a severe impact on societal perceptions of body image. Some celebrities maintain their body images through extreme measures, including plastic surgery and eating disorders. Though celebrities do not directly cause people to seek out these extreme measures, the National Eating Disorder Association says that the media impacts the ways people define ideas of body image.
- Through the media, celebrities have the ability to affect people's interests in political parties or politicians. One of the most recent, high-profiled celebrity endorsements was Oprah Winfrey's endorsement of Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. Though it's unclear exactly how influential Winfrey's endorsement was on the race, a USA Today poll showed that 8 percent of the adults who participated in the poll were more likely to vote for Obama because of Winfrey's backing.
- Many environmentally conscience topics, such as global warming, have received publicity because of celebrities. Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks are strong believers in living a “green” lifestyle. These celebrities have often vocalized support for “going green,” and have endorsed hybrid cars, such as the Toyota Prius. Their advocacy for environmentalism can influence people in adopting a more eco-friendly lifestyle, while strengthening the environmental movement.
- Experienced fashion stylists with at least five to 10 years of styling experience are able to attract high-profile celebrity clients. Up until this time, entry-level fashion stylists earn a daily wage which can range from $150 to $200 per day, depending on the amount of work they earn. Fashion stylists who have begun to draw celebrity clients can earn from $500 to $5,000 per day. Top-level stylists, including those working on the sets of fashion shoots, television shows and music videos, can earn more than $5,000 per day and $100,000 or more per year. Celebrity hairstylists can early a daily wage ranging from $350 to $1,000 per day, depending on the client.
- Celebrity clients are typically only found in large metropolitan areas which are tied closely to the entertainment industry, such as New York City or Los Angeles. Pertinent experience preparing an individual for work as a celebrity stylist can be earned anywhere, however. Volunteer experience as a make-up artist or stylist for local community theaters can give a stylist experience with historical fashions or other specialized make-up effects, such as wounds or wigs. Fashion stylists hoping to work with celebrities someday can also earn worthwhile experience working in a hair salon or cosmetology boutique.
- Although there are no educational requirements for working as a freelance celebrity stylist, earning an applicable degree will help you earn clients faster. Obtain a cosmetology license from a cosmetology or beauty school. Alternatively, you can earn a fine arts degree in costuming or make-up for theatrical production, which brings more experience in creating a style to suit a particular historical or cultural fashion. Other related degree fields include fashion merchandising, fashion designing or visual merchandising.
- Celebrity fashion stylists typically work as freelancers who find work through professional referrals or find employment through a fashion styling firm. Many who make the jump from a small town to a larger celebrity market start out by working as a fashion stylist assistant under a more established stylist. Build a portfolio featuring your best work, including about 15 to 20 before-and-after photos of previous clients, to attract more work as a stylist. While on the job, celebrity hairstylists will scout out locations for fashion shoots and contribute to the overall atmosphere of a film or photo shoot by selecting props and accessories to go with a celebrity’s costume and make-up.
- Inquire at a local jeweler in Hollywood about pieces that they may have available for rental purposes. Many jewelers may want you to have an existing relationship with them and this is how celebrities get jewelry loaned to them because they have a relationship with the retailer. Try Melrose Jewelers on Santa Monica Boulevard as they are one of the finest jewelers in the city, or the most well-known of all jewelers, Harry Winston. Harry Winston is famous for loaning jewelry to Hollywood celebrities. You can call the jeweler and describe exactly what you are looking for.
- If you are not local or living in Hollywood, then rent from jewelry rental companies online for the finest jewelry that Hollywood has to offer. There are several online companies that rent jewelry and the process is the same as in person, plus they are still based in Hollywood. These will offer jewelry that possibly was loaned to celebrities.
- Place a deposit down for your chosen pieces of jewelry whether you are in the actual store or online. The going rate is around 25 percent of the rental price as you reserve the jewelry. The jewelry will then be shipped to you or delivered via courier (if you are in the local Hollywood area) within a few days of the event. Depending on the retailer, approximately 5 to 10 percent of the actual retail value will be held on your credit card as a temporary deposit. The hold will then be released once the jewelry is returned.
- Take out a short-term insurance policy if necessary. This is in the case of extremely expensive jewelry that you could in no way afford to replace. Make sure that anything you rent is insured for full replacement value and with a low or no deductible. This protects you and the jeweler.
- Return the jewelry promptly after your event. Most places provide a self-addressed, insured package that can be picked up by the shipper at your convenience. Always use the package given to you to protect the item and for easy return tracking.
- Fake or imitation jewelry may suffice for other occasions, but when it comes to weddings and jewelry for the Indian bride, only gold jewelry will do. Almost every middle- and high-class Indian family spends a considerable amount of money on bridal jewelry. Those who cannot afford expensive jewelry make do with a few basic pieces for the bride — a gold ring, necklace and bracelets. Different stones like diamond, pearl, jade, amethyst, emerald and the like may embellish intricately designed gold jewelry for brides from wealthier families.
Head to Toe
- It is common for Indian brides to be covered in jewelry from head to toe. Brides from rich families may wear a tiara made of gold. However, the most popular piece of jewelry that adorns the head of an Indian bride is a golden pendant hanging from a golden string. The string is placed on the part of the hair of the bride. Some brides also adorn their back of their hair with golden clips.
Face and Neck
- A golden nose stud is a must-have for Indian brides. A golden string may attach the nose stud to the back of the ears. Gold earrings also are chosen for the bride. The bride and her family members often spend hours selecting the right gold necklace and earrings, and jewelers get ready for the wedding season with a mind-boggling array of earrings and necklaces.
- Armlets, bracelets and finger rings beautify the arms and hands of an Indian bride. Armlets may be worn on one or both arms, but gold bracelets have to be worn on both hands along with bangles. A bride may wear one or 10 finger rings, depending on her financial status. Gold strings may connect the bracelets and the finger rings.
Waist and Legs
- A waist band is an ornament worn by brides belonging to rich families. The weight of a waist band may vary from a few grams to more than 2 pounds. Toe rings and anklets complete the traditional Indian bridal jewelry set. The anklets make a soft jingling noise when the bride walks.
The All-Important Necklace
- The most important piece of bridal jewelry is the necklace that the bridegroom ties around the bride’s neck during the marriage ritual. This is known as the mangalsutra; it is made of gold and contains black beads to ward off evil eye. A wedding is assumed to be solemnized when the groom ties the necklace around the neck of the bride

- Wet a cotton pad with nonacetone nail polish remover. Swipe it over your nails to remove any remaining polish and provide a clean surface for the new polish.
- Position a cuticle pusher just above the cuticle and gently push it back toward your nail bed. Repeat on each nail to create a larger surface.
- Swipe a nail polish base coat from the cuticle to the edge of each nail. One coat will help both the polish and pearls to adhere to your nails for longer. Allow the base coat to dry completely.
- Place the brush of your base color at the cuticle and slowly move it until you reach the tip of your nail. Wipe the brush along the sides of your nail if any space remains for one even coat. Choose a neutral-toned polish in nude or pale pink for a classic look or a dark jewel tone for a dramatic effect.
- Pick up a half pearl with a small pair of tweezers.
- Drop the pearl close to the cuticle onto your wet nail. The pearl will set in the polish.
- Continue to paint each nail and immediately apply the pearls. Wait for your nails to dry completely.
- Swipe a sheer top coat over each nail and pearl, moving the brush quickly from cuticle to tip to avoid clumping. Wait for your nails to dry.
- Make sure your nails are in good shape before you start making nail art designs. Cut or file your nails if they need it. Also, remove any old nail polish currently on your nails. - Decide what nail art products and nail art supplies you are going to use. You can opt to go with nail art pens or brushes. Debra Lynn’s Nail Art Brush set (found in the Resources section) has a nice collection of nail art brushes you could use. It’s also a good idea to look through your nail polish and choose your colors before you begin drawing the designs.
- Decide what you want your nail art designs to look like. You can make up your own nail art designs or go with professional nail art. You can even follow my flower nail art guide located in the Related Articles section. Whatever you do is up to you.
- Brush on a base coat with a nail art brush. This base coat can be clear, a neutral color, or a solid color. You can also add another coat to your base coat to strengthen the color. After you’re done, let your nails dry.
- Roll your nail art brush in the nail polish and make sure that the nail polish is evenly distributed on the brush. You don’t want gobs of nail polish messing up your work. If you’re a beginner at making nail art designs, keep them simple. Don’t make your designs look too busy. Once you’re done, let your nails dry before proceeding.
- Protect your new nail art designs with a top clear nail polish coat. Reapply the clear coat every two or three days and be careful when opening cans of soda, exercising, and doing other tasks that might damage your hard work. You should also wear gloves when playing with soil or doing outside work.
- Pour room temperature water into a disposable cup, almost to the top. Open all bottles of polish and place them within reach. Use at least three colors that have a bit of contrast. For example, use a pale shade, a dark shade and a medium shade.
- Drop one or two drops of polish onto the surface of the water. The nail polish should spread out and make a circle on the water. If it drops to the bottom without creating a circle on the surface, try a different nail polish. This color is your base color for the marble effect, meaning it will show the most.
- Drop one or two drops of your second color of nail polish on top of your base color. It should create a smaller circle on top of your base color.
- Continue with each color that you would like to add to the effect. You can use many colors or you can use only two or three colors, repeating each color at least once in the same order.
- Drag the tip of a cuticle stick through the circles of polish to create the marble effect. Begin at the center and drag the tip toward the outer edge. Reverse this for more swirls.
- Insert your nail. The nail polish will adhere to your nail.
- Remove nail from water. Remove tape or use nail polish remover and cotton swabs to clean up any excess polish. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 for each nail.
- Apply top coat and let dry.
Prepping Your Nails
- Remove any nail polish that you have on your nails with nail polish remover and cotton swabs.
- Trim your nails if necessary and file the edges and any rough spots on the top of your nail.
- Push your cuticles back. You can do this with your fingernails or with a cuticle tool, if you have one.
Finding Your Nail Art
- Begin looking through old magazines for words and/or pictures that are small enough to fit on your nails. The words can be put on the nail at an angle to make it easier to find words that will fit.
- Cut the words and/or pictures that you like that will fit on your nail out and set them to the side.
- Make sure that you cut out enough words and/or pictures for all of your nails plus a few more just in case some get ruined while you try to place them on your nail or you find that they don’t fit.
Applying the Nail Art
- Begin by painting two coats of whatever color your would like on your nails. Make sure that you allow the first coat of the colored nail polish to dry completely before applying the second coat.
- Apply the words and/or pictures that you have chosen onto your nails while the second coat of color is still tacky. Using tweezers to help you to position the little pieces of paper will make this process easier, and pushing the pieces down with toothpicks will allow you to tack them on to your nail without smudging the surrounding polish.
- Paint a clear top coat on all of your nails carefully so as not to pull of the decals that you have just put down. You can use the toothpicks to get ride of any air bubbles that you may find under the decals during this process.
- Paint another layer of top coat on all of your nails if you feel it’s necessary, but only after the first layer of top coat has dried completely.
- For the most formal events, such as balls, evening weddings or opera performances, men wore “full dress.” In their book, “The 1920s” Kathleen Morgan Drowne and Patrick Huber write that these formal suits consisted of black or dark blue worsted swallow-tailed, satin-trimmed coats and matching trousers trimmed down the side with braid or satin ribbon worn with a white vest and shirt. Dress shirts at this time had no buttons or collars. Instead, men used studs to close buttonholes and attached stiff collars with buttons. Shirts also featured French-style cuffs closed with cuff links. A white bow tie, black silk top hat, white gloves, patent leather oxford shoes, spats, a white silk handkerchief and a white boutonniere completed the look.
- Unlike today, men of the 1920s wore tuxedos for semiformal occasions, including most evening engagements, such as dinner parties, the theater, or dining out. Like a full-dress suit, the tuxedo consisted of black or dark blue jacket and pants, but the jacket had no tails and the pants might not be trimmed, according to Drowne and Huber. Men might wear a black or white vest, but always a black tie. The phrases black tie and white tie originated at this time; “white tie” indicated full dress and “black tie” meant that men should wear tuxedos. A tuxedo outfit included the same accessories as full dress attire, except men wore bowler hats instead of top hats.
- While men’s casual wear became more laid back in the 1920s, business wear remained conservative, according to the University of Vermont. For work, most men wore creased, clean-cut suits, neckties and long overcoats. Drowne and Huber write that business suits consisted of a jacket, trousers, and a vest in black, gray, tan, brown, blue or green. Men wore ascots or long neckties instead of bow ties. As the decade went on, business suits became looser, with longer jackets and a less defined waist. Besides wearing suits to work, men also wore them to other daytime engagements and church services. By the middle of the 1920s, men began wearing shirts with more comfortable attached collars. When going to work, men usually wore fedoras or peaked caps.
Young Men’s Style
- In the 1920s, young men’s style often originated at college campuses, according to Drowne and Huber. This included pants with wider legs, as wide as 30 inches; blazers with badges or crests on the front pocket; belted jackets with box pleats on the sides; small felt caps; trench coats; and knee-length Chesterfield coats.
- According to Drowne and Huber, formal and semiformal wear required shiny patent-leather shoes. Most men chose oxford shoes — low-cut, low-heeled, laced shoes — for business and casual wear. Sport oxfords featured comfortable rubber soles and usually came in black, brown, tan and white. Two-toned oxfords, either brown or black and white, also became common.
- Drowne and Huber write that London designers greatly influenced men’s wear in the 1920s. Athletes such as Bobby Jones and Bill Tilden became trendsetters, leading young men to don golfing knickers, V-neck sweaters, or white flannel trousers, whether they played golf or tennis or not. Film star Rudolph Valentino brought the look of a suave, sophisticated “sheik” to American men, who emulated him by shaving their beards and moustaches and parting their hair in the middle. Charles Lindbergh popularized the leather aviation jacket. Men all over America imitated the impeccable style of Edward, Prince of Wales, with his tweed kickers and knee socks and bright Fair-Isle sweaters.
- Select a waistcoat pattern. The pattern you buy depends on which type of waistcoat you want to make. Commercial patterns available at fabric stores are a good choice if you’re making a wedding waistcoat. Online companies offer waistcoat patterns that are more suitable for historical re-enactors.
- Cut out the pattern pieces and lay them right side up on the fashion fabric. Fold the fabric in half and lay it out on a flat surface. Use a cutting board if you have one. Pin the pattern pieces to the fashion fabric, following the grain line (direction of the pattern) of the fabric. Remove the pattern pieces from the fashion fabric and pin them to the lining fabric, following the grain line. Cut out the lining fabric. Remove the pattern pieces from the fabric. Lay the waistcoat front pattern piece only on the interfacing and cut it out.
- Pin the interfacing to the vest front pieces and hand baste it in place along the seam lines. Trim the corners.
- Cut the back belt pieces out of the fashion fabric, using the pieces included with your pattern. If your pattern does not have a belt, skip this step. The right piece will be longer than the left piece. Fold both belt sections in half. Stitch the long side of both pieces. Stitch the short right edge of the right-hand belt and the short left edge of the left-hand belt. Turn the belt pieces right side out and press them both. Slide the belt buckle onto the left-hand piece and turn under the raw edge. Slip stitch the belt buckle in place.
- Pin the belt pieces to the back piece of the fashion fabric along the lines indicated by your pattern. Baste the belt pieces in place. Machine stitch along the basting lines.
- Machine stitch the back and front pieces of the fashion fabric together at the shoulders and side seams. Repeat this step with the lining fabric.
- Place the right sides of the fashion fabric against the right sides of the lining fabric. Pin along the bottom edges of the waistcoat front and back pieces, along the front pieces and along the armhole edges. Leave approximately 10 inches open along the bottom edge of the back sections. Stitch the pinned sections together with your sewing machine.
- Pull the lining to the inside by bringing the front sections through the shoulders and out through the opening in the lower back edge. Press all the edges flat.
- Turn under the seam allowances in the opening in the back section and slip stitch the fashion fabric and lining fabric together, thus closing the opening.
- Mark the buttonhole placement on the left front. Most patterns provide placement markings. If your pattern doesn’t have these markings, position the buttonholes approximately 2 to 2 1/2 inches apart. Stitch the buttonholes with your sewing machine.
- Mark the button placement on the right front of the waistcoat, matching the buttons with the buttonholes. Hand or machine sew the buttons in place.
- Wear scarves in the winter. As a fashion choice, men’s winter scarves, ranging from thin and fleecey to thick and woolly, are rarely disputed. Men’s summer scarves in light, floaty fabrics are a far more controversial choice and are often considered either a fashion faux paus or a bold act of trendsetting. Try the summer scarf only if you enjoy being daring with your fashion choices and are willing to weather a little criticism.
- Choose colors and styles according to men’s fashion traditions. Avoid scarves that are considered “women’s fashion” by staying away from brighter, lighter colors (pinks, purples, yellows, oranges, true white) as well as lacy weaves, fluffier yarns, and accessories (like pom-poms). Look for scarves in more earthy or blue/grey colors, black, or off-white with tighter, flatter weaves. Seek solid colors or patterns that resemble those found in other men’s fashion, such as plaid, checked, striped and argyle.
- Use scarves to highlight your upper body. A scarf around the neck emphasizes your neck and shoulders, especially if you use a thinner scarf. To be successful with this, leave your scarf tails long and don’t bunch the fabric around your neck–just use one loop, like a turtleneck.
- Wrap your scarf instead of tying it, in general. Tying your scarf in a knot can wrinkle and damage it, but it also creates less warm cover and doesn’t look as attractive. Lay your scarf around your neck evenly (both tails the same length). For greater warmth, wrap the scarf from front to back (the loop around the front of your neck), then wrap the tails around to the front. Create an interesting, asymmetrical look by leaving one tail in front, and one in the back. If you do tie your scarf, create only one knot and leave it loose (this look is appropriate with very wide scarves).

- Suits during the early 1930s were close cut to use less fabric. The Great Depression started a conservative fashion climate. Extravagant colors were in bad taste; somber hues like gray, brown, beige or light blue were more acceptable. Men’s suits were fitted with single or double-breasted lapels, button fastenings and wide shoulders. Wool, flannel, tweeds and linens, depending on the season, were the most popular fabric choices. Knitted waistcoats were also popular. Men wore shirts of plain or striped cotton with attached collars. Trousers had straight wide hems turned up with center creases and cloth color that matched jackets and waistcoats.
In the later 1930s, with a return to greater economic stability, cuts of men’s suits were more generous. Jackets with heavily padded shoulders and fuller sleeves were popular. Businessmen wore tapered trousers, whereas younger men wore flowing trousers with long coats in the zoot suit style. Buttons were used to fasten men garments in the early 1930s but zippers were promoted as an alternative for men to avoid humiliating exposures caused by missing or unhinged buttons. Storekeepers also promoted zippers as a cheaper alternative to buying buttons. Fashion designers, especially the Italian Elsa Schiaparelli, made these devices popular in couture.
Undergarments And Swimwear
- Undergarments for men in the 1930s were loose underpants and a vest. Men also wore union suits in winter, but these were no longer fashionable. Boxers and briefs became popular with elastic waists that replaced buttons, snaps and ties. Y-vent brief styles were invented by Jockey in 1934 and reproduced by Munsingerware in 1936. Swimwear was constructed from wool and was styled as a one-piece that covered the chest area, with straps over the shoulders and a panel over the front leg openings. Swim trunks, with the creation of elasticized boxers and briefs, also became popular.
- Men wore shoes of black, brown and tan leather. Two-toned brogues were a popular style and the loafer trend started in this decade. Laborers were likely to wear boots.
Hats and Hair
- Hats were an essential item. Norms in the 1930s required that both men and women wear hats. Men wore their hair short under bowlers or snap-brim fedoras. Trilbies (hats with pinched crowns and short brims), homburgs (with a crease along the crown length) and straw, flat-crowned boaters were also worn. Beards were unacceptable, but short mustaches were popular.
- Accessories during the 1930s included pocket handkerchiefs, silk scarves, leather gloves and rolled umbrellas. Sunglasses were known as “cheaters” in American and British slang. The term was originally for spectacles in general, but became specific to sunglasses because they blocked a person’s identity.

- Find a list of sales reps in your area; these are who you will have to be in touch with to talk about buying wholesale.
- Check the websites of the designers for contact information on the reps, such as email address and phone numbers. They may also have a general wholesale email you can contact for more specific information.
- Call or email the sales rep and ask for a line sheet; a line sheet will show your their collection, wholesale prices, sizing information and fabrication.
- Ask the rep about minimum order quantities to qualify for wholesale pricing, explain to that you are a fashion store boutique looking for supply.
- Place your order.
Go to Trade Shows
- Check out new designers at trade shows; they are usually willing to talk to you about pricing and the like right on the spot.
- Place your order with the designer on the spot if you are really confident the product will fit in with your boutique’s style.
- Get the business cards of the designers or reps and line sheet to take home; you will get a lot of information at trade shows and want to be sure to be able to look over it again in a less busy place. This is especially so if you like some providers but are unable to order from them right away.
- Because a French wardrobe tends to include more neutral colors, French clothing doesn’t go out of style as much as other types of clothing, notes FreeBeautyTips.org. Neutral colors are usually accented by adding high quality accessories such as colorful scarves or purses. French clothing can also last longer because of its high quality.
- There are differences in sizing systems and discrepancies between manufacturers of American and French clothing. For example, in the United States, a woman’s size 10 is equivalent to a French size 40, according to OnlineConversion.com. Consumers should first measure clothes in centimeters or inches and then ask for this information when selecting French clothes from a store. Before buying online clothes, ensure the seller has a return police because it’s highly possible to end up with a size that doesn’t properly fit. French shoe sizes also differ from those in the United Kingdom, as a size 8 men’s shoe in the United Kingdom corresponds to a size 42 French shoe size.
- Because temperatures in France can vary, dressing in layers is a main feature of French clothing. Tourists should include light wraps such as sweaters, jackets or raincoats, which can easily be removed as temperatures change. Although layer dressing is trendy, jackets and sweaters should also be coordinated with clothing, regarding color and style.

eHow: How do you establish a brand?
- Celikian: Every brand begins with the name and logo. Both should be an embodiment of everything the brand stands for. All successful brands represent an idea or a certain type of person. This message needs to be clearly relayed to the consumer. For example, if you want to start a streetwear brand, your logo probably shouldn’t be a butterfly. In terms of design, it must be consistent with the company aesthetic. Designs must always be geared toward the consumer that your brand intends on selling to. It’s always good to experiment with styles, but don’t alienate your customer, and be true to yourself. You must represent your brand in every way so that the consumer knows you are authentic.
eHow: What are typical startup costs?
- Celikian: Startup costs can vary. It is important to have an office space where you conduct business and store your inventory. This could be the garage at the house you reside in. Many companies start out of a garage. We started out of a garage; there is no shame in that. The beginning stages of the company should focus on the product. Try to make the best product possible for the consumer. For the most part, nobody will see your work facilities, so you don’t need to waste money renting a warehouse or office space for the first year.
eHow: What about equipment?
- Celikian: In my particular business, screen-printing machines can be anywhere from $2,000 to $100,000. You can save on costs by printing yourself, but you also need to consider that you have a company to run, and doing it yourself may be too daunting. If you will not be doing the printing yourself and choose to outsource it, you will mainly need storage racks for the inventory.
eHow: How many personnel are needed?
- Celikian: Choosing the right personnel is key. In a partnership, for example, you have to make sure that everyone has different skill sets. There are many different task such as designing, dealing with production, overseeing marketing, managing inventory, sales, accounting, research and development — just to name a few. One person could take on a few of these roles; some special individuals can take on all these roles. Some use family and friends for assistance in the early stages.
eHow: How do you find good people to hire?
- Celikian: Finding the right people to have around you is a skill in itself. You must identify your weaknesses and fill the voids. Startups usually don’t have the starting capital to simply hire a team of people and place them on salary. Usually, you will see people partnering up so everybody can focus on their strengths. For this you need to find somebody you trust and who has the same mindset. Luckily for me, my closest friends growing up were the smartest people I knew.
eHow: What positions should be filled first?
- Celikian: Find somebody that is savvy in sales. You may have the best product, but it doesn’t help if nobody knows it exists. Your sales rep must fit the mold of your brand. When buyers come along and want to buy some of your product, your sales rep must be authentic. The fashion industry is one of emotion. People buy things because of an emotion, including those who are in charge of buying for stores. Your sales rep must know how to appeal to these emotions. Finding a good designer is just as important. You can reach out to freelance designers or college art students. Just like everything else, you will get what you pay for. There are websites like iFreelance and LinkedIn that can assist you in finding people.
eHow: What if someone is unable to hire right away?
- Celikian: If you are new to the industry and want to handle the sales yourself, you will need to hustle and grind. You’ll need to go to every trade show, get phone numbers, ask many questions and not take no for an answer. You will constantly need to follow up and make sure that buyers do not forget about you. The more trade shows you go to, the more contacts you will have. Some will even ask if they can work for you. If they do fit the mold of your company, then you give them a shot.
eHow: What should someone know before getting into the industry?
- Celikian: Do your research before launching. Knowing the etiquette in this industry is key. Go to trade shows, learn the terminology and ask questions constantly. One thing that surprised me was that there are a lot of nice people in the clothing industry. As long as you show that you are committed — that you are serious about the business and not simply a “dreamer” — many people will give you advice. Everybody has had their share of trials, and they will respect the fact that you’re willing to take on such a challenging journey. Prior to launching Arka, we conducted research for over a year. We went to trade shows and asked questions. We looked at many successful brands and tried to understand what made them successful. Once we felt ready, we dove into the industry head first and never looked back.
eHow: What is the biggest challenge?
- Celikian: The biggest challenge is juggling all the different roles and choosing how much time, effort and money to allocate to which area. Just like everything else in this business, there really isn’t a “one size fits all” formula for this. You need to work on what is effective for your brand. You will make your share of mistakes, but just know that it’s never the end of the world. The key is to learn from them and not dwell. What has worked for me personally is that I never focus the money; I focus on the product. If you believe in your product and love what you do, it will show.
eHow: What is the biggest reward?
- Celikian: For me, compliments are better than currency. I take pride in what I do. I put my heart and soul into all my designs, as corny as that may sound. I love it when people comment on our artwork. When we receive emails from people saying how much they love our shirts, it always feels really great. I’m not too big on quotes, but there is one that I heard that I can relate to and that works for anyone trying to break into this industry: “Create like a god, command like a king, work like a slave” (Constantin Brancusi).

- Determine exactly what type of clothing, shoes and accessories you will need–this will basically be the theme of your show. For example, you may need formal wear, bridal dresses, swimwear or casual clothing for men.
- Write a donation letter to send to potential donors. In the letter, state your name and position, the name of your organization, purpose of the fashion show, date, time and location information, what type of clothing you will need, the incentives or benefits of donating (what you will do for donors in return) and the date you’ll need the donations.
For example, you could state something similar to the following in your letter: “I am Sue Jane, Chairperson of the Valley School Fashion Show Committee. Our annual fashion show will be June 19, at 4 pm at the Valley Mall. If you could donate swimwear for models to wear, we would be most appreciative and give your business a half-page ad in the event program. We are donating all proceeds from this year’s show to the local children’s hospital. This is a great opportunity to help the community by participating in this charitable event.”
- Develop a list of potential donors, including local independently owned boutiques, chain clothing stores, thrift and vintage stores and fashion designers. Department stores are unlikely to donate, although chain clothing stores and franchises often donate clothing to fashion shows in exchange for advertising.
- Send your donation letter to the potential donors on your list. Email is the fastest, and most preferred method of soliciting donations, but you can also send the letter by postal mail, if time allows you to do so. Alternatively, you can call the donors and ask how they’d prefer to receive your donation request.
- Follow up with the potential donors one week after sending your letters, if they have not responded. Offer to answer any questions they may have about your organization or fashion show–they may just need clarification or further details before they can make a decision regarding whether or not to donate.
- Take great care of any donations you receive, and store them well to prevent damage or theft. If you return all items in good condition, it is likely your donors will support your future fashion shows.
- Build a foundation. Whether you are a man or a woman, the most important part of getting dressed is having the right undergarments. Women should choose smooth underwear that will not show any lines. Men should wear smooth and comfortable underwear along with a body-skimming tank top or “V”-neck T-shirt. In general, men should stay away from crew-neck T-shirts as a base layer. Crew-neck T-shirts show through layered clothing.
- Find a close-fitting tank top or T-shirt if you are a woman. Tank tops are the right choice for dressy layered looks, while T-shirts make a more casual fashion statement. Men should choose a slightly loose polo or golf shirt for a casual look. A button-up, long-sleeved shirt is appropriate for dressier looks.
- Pick out a middle layer. This layer should be slightly thicker than a T-shirt or button-up shirt. Thin cardigans or pullover sweaters made out of merino wool, silk knit or thin cotton weaves work well for both men and women. Cotton weave is a good choice for casual fashion, while silk and merino wool have a dressier appearance.
- Choose the right outerwear for the weather. The last layer is the layer that will protect you the most from the elements. If it is raining or snowing outside, this layer should be waterproof. If you need a dressier look, a gabardine jacket or trench coat works in cool and mild weather. Heavy wool coats are the right choice for cold, winter weather. In the spring and summer months, a cotton twill jacket or blazer is the perfect choice for your last layer.
- Add accessories. Women can wear chunky necklaces that will complete the layered look and make it into a fashion statement. Men can add a wool scarf on cold days or stick with a simple pair of sunglasses in warm months.
- Add rubbing alcohol to a cotton ball without saturating it.
- Treat the region that has tape residue. Do not rub the cotton ball on the affected area, simply spot treat the area by applying the alcohol onto the tape residue. Alcohol eliminates the adhesive consistency.
- Rub off the tape residue from the fabric with a dry finger. You’ll be able to roll off the bits of adhesive until they are completely gone.
- Throw away all the teen magazines in the house that focus on skinny girls and the surreal image of the ideal body type. Discuss with your overweight teen how many of those girls in the magazines may be suffering from health issues, such as anorexia. Browse through fashion magazines that feature your daughter’s body type.
- Buy some health magazines that can help your overweight daughter understand the importance of losing weight. Bring out some fashion catalogs that are designed for plus-size teen girls.
- Set up a health plan for your plus-size teen to follow. Meet with a nutritionist or doctor, if necessary, to help your daughter realize that it’s possible for her to lose the weight in a healthy manner. After the meeting, bring your daughter to the local mall or boutique to pick out some new fashionable clothes.
- Make the idea of losing weight appealing to your plus-size teen. While she may feel great in her new wardrobe, propose buying a new outfit for every five or ten pounds she loses.
- Ask the saleswomen to help your plus-size teen pick out clothes that compliment her figure. Each time she meets a new goal, bring her back to the shop to have the saleswomen help her find a new outfit to show off in public to her friends and family.
- Fashion designers who draw their collections frequently use materials that can be found in most art, craft and hobby supply stores. These tools include sketch pads, charcoal pencils, colored pencils, felt pens, putty rubber for erasing, cartridge paper and B, 2B and 4B pencils.
- Sketching can run the gamut from a quick, rough drawing to very detailed, lifelike figures. Fashion designers sketch clothing to put their vision for a collection on paper. Unless the sketches will be sent to a seamstress or manufacturing facility, they need not be technical, neat or intricately detailed. Often, fashion designers make notes on their sketches to denote what fabric and cuts they want for the finished piece.
- Fashion silhouettes are pre-made blank clothing templates. Most designers that use these are focused on the colors, fabric and patterns of a piece, rather than the cut or design. Silhouettes are often used to design lingerie, swimwear and outerwear.
- Designers who want to focus more on pattern, color, fabric and cut than drawing an actual body often use figure templates. These templates are often blank bodies, with no coloring, features or hair. Designers can add these details if they wish, though many choose not to. Figure templates can be found for free, though they can also be downloaded for a price, typically costing less than $5 each.
- CAD, or computer-aided drafting, is being used more frequently by fashion designers to draw clothing. This is the preferred method for many designers that are computer-savvy but not skilled at making sketches and detailed paper drawings. CAD allows fashion designers to render a more realistic representation of their clothing, and some programs can even make 3D clothing sketches.
- Study fashion religiously. Look through every magazine monthly and watch fashion shows on television. The Bravo and E channels have a lot of shows that will teach you about style and styling practices. Read every book you can find. Educate yourself about fashion and designers. You should know every current hip designer and their signature style.
- Get a degree in fashion if you can. If not try to get an internship at a design house, fashion marketing firm or work for a celebrity. Working for a celebrity as a personal assistant is one of the easiest ways to break into the business. Make great suggestions to the celebrity and you will be the natural choice for the position of personal stylist.
- Use some friends and family members as prototypes. Take a photo of them on a unstylish day when they look quite blah. Then, dress and style them according to what their day entails. Take an after photo to compare. Create a book of your before and after photos. Fill it in also with commentary about what you styled them in, what they were dressed for (event, normal day, etc.) and even include a bit about their personality and personal style. This is the beginning of your portfolio.
- Go into a local store that seems to do quite well and offer to have a “day of styling.” As customers come in, treat them to your styling services for free. You will demonstrate your style services and create business for the store because, naturally, your customers will buy items from the store according to how you style them. Make sure you have business cards made ahead of time and pass these out to people throughout the day. Repeat this at other stores to give yourself more exposure. Offer a discount or some other treat to people who hire you as a result of this consultation.
- Start a website that lists your services and shows your portfolio. You can also start a blog about the current trends; include simple tips and tricks so that clients will be enticed to visit your site on a regular basis and call you when they need help getting styled for a special occasion or new job. That’s all it takes! Continue to build your business and your clientele will grow as well. Good luck!
- Master your craft. Enroll at the best training school you can find — and afford. Practice on friends, neighbors and family members to help finance your training. Celebrity stylist Ursula Stephen built a freelance business in her basement before launching her celebrity career.
- Pay your dues. Apply for trainee positions at upmarket salons. Be prepared to start at the bottom. If you work hard and demonstrate talent and creative flair, you will soon progress.
- Broaden your experience. Take every opportunity to work with a range of hair types and different stylists. Keep up to date with trends, techniques and products.
- Offer to work on test shoots. Build relationships with local photographers and work for free in exchange for professional shots of your work.
- Showcase your talent by entering competitions. Specialist magazines and websites often promote competitions as a way to find and showcase new talent. Issue press releases to publicize your successes.
- Build your portfolio, known in the industry as your book. Include 10 to 15 photographs of your work. Aim to show that you can work with a variety of hair types and put your own stamp on the styles.
- Identify celebrities in your town. Contact their representatives and tell them about your work. A single job when, for example, the celebrity’s regular stylist is unavailable, can lead to more work.
- Network by building alliances with makeup artists, fashion stylists and others in the industry. Befriend the receptionist at your local television station and get to know staff at all local entertainment venues. Use social networking platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to get your name — and talent — out there.
- Obtain representation. Once you have built a compelling portfolio and developed a handful of clients, a managing agent will get your name in front of the right people — as well as helping you take care of the financial side of your business.
- Find your homeowners insurance policy. Read the coverage amounts for personal property claims and jewelry. Look for the agent’s phone number.
- Call the insurance agent. Explain that you want to file a claim for a lost wedding ring. Ask whether a written request is necessary and what documentation he needs.
- Contact the jewelry store where the ring was purchased. Explain that you lost your wedding ring and would like a replacement. Request the fax number and fax a photograph of the ring to the jeweler. Request a written estimate of the replacement cost of the ring for the insurance claim.
- Prepare your documentation for the insurance claim. Copy the initial receipt and recent appraisals. Blow up pictures that show the details on the ring. Complete the claim form, if one was sent, and include the date of purchase, type of jewels, number of jewels and initial cost and replacement cost of the ring. Include the jeweler’s written estimate in the packet.
- Send the packet to the agent and the insurance adjuster on the case. Call the agent and adjuster if you have not received a call within the week. Ask him if the packet has been received and whether other documentation is required for the claim.
- Find out how long it will take to process the claim. Mark the date on your calendar. Contact the adjuster if there has been no correspondence or phone call about the claim.
- Discuss the claim with the adjuster when he does call you. Listen to the amount quoted for the wedding ring. Accept the amount if it will cover the cost of the ring or is the policy limit.
- Negotiate the replacement value of the ring if all the adjuster offers is the initial value. Remind the adjuster of the estimate and the cost to make the ring. Explain the importance of having the same ring, stating that you were under the impression the ring would be replaced. Negotiate up until you reach an offer that is acceptable to you, then take it.
- Sign the release of claim documents the adjuster sends to your home. Return the document by mail. Cash the check.
Preparing Your Nails
- Make sure your nails are clean and filed so there are no hangnails or rough edges. Apply a thin coat of clear base coat and let it dry thoroughly.
- Coat each nail with a thin layer of black nail polish and let it dry thoroughly. Apply a second coat if the first one doesn’t completely cover the nail or there are streaks.
- Dab a thick coat of the red nail polish to each nail tip, covering about 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch of the tip of each nail, depending on the length of your nails. Take a liner brush or toothpick and draw wiggly threads of the red polish upward toward your cuticle. Stop about 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch from your cuticle.
- Dab a thick coat of orange nail polish on top of the red edging at the very end of your nail. It doesn’t have to be perfect. The more jagged the edge, the more it will resemble a flame. Take a clean liner brush or a new toothpick, and drag threads of the orange polish upward toward the cuticle. Don’t cover all the red with the orange. Leave some red visible.
- Apply the yellow nail polish on top of the orange polish at the nail tip. This is the final layer of polish. Take a clean liner brush or new toothpick, and draw the yellow polish around and through the orange and red polish. These three colors will mix together in some places and stand on their own in others, adding dimension and depth to the flame painting. Because there are multiple coats of wet nail polish, drying will take at least 20 minutes or more.
- If there are areas you don’t like, you can cover them with black polish as a quick fix. Apply a thin layer of clear top coat and let dry.
